The Technical Conditions Of Stainless Steel Precision Investment Casting

Basic requirements Foundry sand should meet the following requirements:

  • ①Higher purity and cleanliness. Taking silica sand as an example, the SiO2 content of cast iron sand is required to be more than 90%, and for larger steel castings, the content of SiO2 is required to be more than 97%;
  • ②High refractoriness and thermal stability;
  • ③Proper particle shape and particle composition;
  • ④It is not easy to be wetted by liquid metal;
  • ⑤Inexpensive and easy to obtain.  

Particle shape and composition The particle shape and composition of the foundry sand have an impact on the fluidity, compactness, air permeability, strength and permeability of liquid metal, and are important indicators of the quality of foundry sand.Particle shape There are generally three shapes of foundry sand.

  • ①Round sand: The particles are round or close to round, with smooth surface and no prominent edges and corners.
  • ②Polygonal sand: The particles are polygonal, and most of them have obtuse angles.
  • ③ Sharp-angled sand: The particles are sharp-angled, and most of them have acute angles.

The particle shape of foundry sand is generally expressed by the angle coefficient (the actual specific surface area of ​​the sand/theoretical specific surface area of ​​the sand).

Particle composition The particle composition of sand is expressed by the sieve number. The measurement method is to pour the dry sand that has been washed with water to remove the mud and dried into a standard sieve, and then put it on the sand sieve for sieving. After sieving, each sieve The remaining sand is weighed separately, usually the first and last sieve numbers of the three adjacent sieves with the most concentrated sand after sieving with a standard sieve represent the particle composition.

Types and uses Casting sand is divided into two categories: silica sand and non-siliceous sand according to the different mineral composition.

Silica Sand

The main mineral composition is SiO2.

  • ①Natural silica sand: used for molding sand and core sand for non-ferrous alloy castings, iron castings and small and medium-sized steel castings.
  • ②Selected natural silica sand: used for all kinds of molding sand and core sand using organic matter as a binder.
  • ③Artificial silica sand: molding sand and core sand used for steel castings.

Non-siliceous sand There are many types of non-siliceous sand with different uses.

  • Limestone sand: It is made of crushed limestone, the main mineral composition is CaCO3, and it is used for molding sand and core sand of steel castings.
  • Zircon sand: The main mineral composition is ZrO2•SiO2, which is used for core sand or sand mold surface sand of large steel castings and alloy steel parts. The composition is corundum α-Al2O3, which is used as a shell material for investment and ceramic mold casting.
  • Olivine sand: The main mineral composition is olivine (MgFe) 2SiO4, which is used for molding sand and core sand for iron castings, non-ferrous alloy castings and high manganese steel castings.

Resources

There are abundant silica sand resources in nature, but there are not too many natural silica sands with high SiO2 content suitable for casting. Since 1951, China has successively carried out general surveys of foundry sand resources within its territory, but mainly limited to the vicinity of main traffic lines and major industrial cities. The results of the census show that the natural silica sand resources that can be used for casting in China are abundant and distributed in a wide range. In Zhelimu League, Inner Mongolia, the reserves of natural silica sand amount to hundreds of millions of tons, the shape of its particles is close to round, and the content of SiO2 is about 90%. The sea sand from Jinjiang and Dongshan in Fujian has a SiO2 content of 94-98% and a low mud content. They are all good natural silica sands. Duchang, Xingzi, and Yongxiu counties in Jiangxi have a large number of Quaternary river-lake facies sedimentary silica sand. The SiO2 content is about 90%, the iron content is low, the alkaline oxides are few, and the particle size is uniform. It is a good lake sand. Guangzhou, Hunan and other places have abundant fragile weathered sandstone, which can be processed into artificial silica sand with a SiO2 content of more than 96%, which can be used for the production of steel castings.
