Three Considerations For Designing Stainless Steel Casting Structures
Because stainless steel casting cools and solidifies faster in metal molds than in sand molds, and the metal molds have no tolerance. Therefore, during metal mold casting, the casting stress generated in the castings is greater than that in sand castings.
Cracks are also prone to and easy to occur. Defects such as insufficient pouring, cold barrier, white mouth (for castings), etc. usually:
- The following structural problems should be paid attention to in preventing stainless steel casting from insufficient pouring and cold separation: A. The shape of the casting should be as streamline as possible to avoid sharp edges and sharp changes in the connection, so as to facilitate the flow of molten metal ; B. The wall thickness of the casting should be appropriate and not too thin, especially when the contour size of the casting is large, not too thin; C. A large horizontal plane should be avoided, because it makes the molten metal rise very slowly when the casting is poured, and The air contact surface is large and easy to oxidize. At the same time, due to the fast heat dissipation of the metal type, the liquid metal loses fluidity quickly, which is easy to cause defects such as insufficient pouring, cold barrier, and slag inclusion;
- Pay attention to the following structural problems in preventing cracks in stainless steel casting: A. Ribs, bosses, etc. should be provided to strengthen the weaker parts of the structure to prevent casting cracks; B. When stiffening ribs are arranged on the castings, also The influence of it on the shrinkage of the casting should be considered; C. Protruding parts such as bosses, ribs, and flanges that hinder the free shrinkage of the casting should be minimized; D. The wall thickness is uniform, the transition and connection between the walls should be gentle, and the corners The requirements for proper fillet and other aspects should be stricter than sand casting castings; E. The vertically connected walls should be changed to obliquely connected.
When designing the basic structural unit of stainless steel casting and selecting its parameters, usually pay attention to:
- In order to prevent gray iron castings from whitening, in addition to measures taken from the process, the wall thickness must not be too thin (Some materials point out that when the wall thickness is above 15mm, the corners of the metal mold castings must be rounded. For aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy metal mold castings, the casting fillet should not be less than 3-4m. For cast iron, Casting fillets of steel and copper alloy metal mold castings can be selected according to Table 1.1-32;
- Due to the inconsistency of the metal mold and core, in order to facilitate the removal of the casting and the extraction of the mold, the casting slope of the metal mold casting should be Appropriately larger than sand castings, generally 30%-50% larger. It should be pointed out that the casting slope is not only related to the alloy type and wall height, but also related to the position of the casting surface. When the casting cools and shrinks The surface of the casting that has a tendency to detach from the surface of the metal mold can be designed with a smaller slope, and the surface of the casting that tends to be pressed on the metal mold when the casting shrinks should be given a larger slope. The casting of stainless steel castings of various alloys Slope
- Due to the fast heat dissipation of metal molds, the minimum wall thickness of stainless steel casting should be larger than that of sand casting castings. The minimum wall thickness of various casting alloys and different sizes of castings; (4) The thickness of the inner wall and inner rib of the casting is general It should be 0.6-0.7 of the thickness of the connected outer wall, otherwise, because the inner wall (rib) cools slowly, cracks are likely to occur at the junction of the inner and outer walls when the casting shrinks.
When designing a stainless steel casting with a more complex shape, if the production process has greater difficulties, the appearance of the casting should be as simple as possible without affecting the use of the casting, and the structure of the casting should be changed to facilitate the removal of the casting from the metal mold.
